For some of Rolls-Royce’s most discerning clients, the Silver Cloud’s fabulous factory bodywork was not exclusive enough, so for this select group of buyers, Rolls-Royce offered a range of bespoke bodies. Of these special bodies, the most elegant designed for the Silver Cloud is undoubtedly the drophead coupe, designed by H.J. Mulliner and identified with design number 7504. Only 107 units were built for all Silver Cloud models. This exclusive bodywork, known as an ‘adaptation,’ was created at the time by taking a standard saloon body and transforming it into an elegant convertible by removing the roof, making two doors instead of the usual four, and adding a chrome strip to the car’s line. H.J.’s modifications Mulliner’s designs were so extensive that the resulting car was, in every detail, a completely customized body to the taste of the discerning customer.
This fabulous Silver Cloud 2 convertible was sold new to the famous Universal Studios in Hollywood for screenwriter Robert Sheriff. According to factory records, the Silver Cloud was delivered to Italy before being brought to the United States and appears to have been used in the film “Come September,” produced by Universal and starring Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida, which was filmed in Tuscany.
It was in the US that the car was converted to left-hand drive to better adapt to that country’s driving habits. The car remained in the US until Sheriff’s death and returned to a new European owner in the mid-1980s. It was at this time that the vehicle underwent a meticulous restoration, including new paint in dark blue (Midnight Blue), burgundy upholstery (Guards Red Connolly), and regular mechanical maintenance. It was acquired by a well-known Swiss collector in 2006.
A few years later, we had the opportunity to acquire it, and it passed into the hands of its last owner, who has enjoyed it for over ten years. During this time, the car has been carefully maintained and is in excellent overall condition, both aesthetically and mechanically.
